16 October, 2009 (16:50) | Mobile Reviews | By:

Mobile gaming is another important market in mobile phone industry, thus phone maker have to focus in this part by producing gaming friendly handset. Sony Ericsson has already come out the Sony Ericsson F305 that is PSP-like handset but they does not stop there. Recently they are launched another gaming focus handset, the Sony Ericsson Yari. It is said that the device is a gesture gaming phone which offer easy gaming controlling features. So let take a look…

Design

The Sony Ericsson Yari is a slider phone that sports a neat and simple design. It features a 2.4-inch screen with QVGA resolution, which has pretty good picture quality. There are two buttons right above that are used to call up the game menu or control in-game actions. So that you can play game horizontally. Below the display, there is an ample D-pad is sided by six controls – two soft keys at the top (left and right), Call and Shortcut keys at the left side, and End and Clear key on the right. The rounded button D-pad it self also assigned to various shortcuts on the homescreen like up direction is for music player,  left and right were messaging and Bluetooth and down for contacts. Sliding the phone will open  decent 12-key alphanumeric keypad. The keypad is flat and offering little tangible borders between the different rows or columns. And it is easy to press. Overall, the Sony Ericsson Yari is slim with 15.7mm thick and 115g, therefor it is pocket friendly.

Features

The gesture control gaming is the Yari selling point. This feature actually was get famous because of Nintendo Wii. However, it is first time we see feature on a mobile phone. How does it work? Take the pre-loaded tennis game as an example. Firstly activate the game and set the device up on a table top for example, and stand in front of the phone, imagining you have a tennis racket in your hand. Than start waving your hand as you will see the display showing the tennis ball flying and the front facing camera will pick up your motions as you play the game. It is just like you paly with the Wii.

While for other entertainment, Yari equipped with the latest Walkman music player without being a dedicated Walkman device. It is quite familiar to other Walkman phone. However, the new added features is the music player background graphics has variety of visual styles – cassette, old record player, CD player etc. They do not deliver added functionality, but look pretty nice indeed.  Audio is boosted by Mega Bass features, and it quality is pretty nice. The player is able to play most audio and video file formats. And of course the phone also has come with a Stereo FM radio with RDS support.

The camera on the Yari is a 5.0 Megapixel device, with autofocus and an LED flash, as well as Geotagging. Features like face detection and image stabilisation are included. The camera interface has no changes since the SE W995, and it is easy to use as usual. The quality of the images that taken is pretty nice for a mid range phone. Video recording is also enabled on the camera, which allows to record in QVGA@30fps. The quality is not good as for picture capturing, though it got a video light which is a nice attempt.

The Sony Ericsson Yari has a GPS receiver. You will find both Google Maps and Wayfinder Navigator on board. The usual Location services set is pre-installed as well. Other applications such as Tracker make good use of the GPS receiver.

Conclusion

We have to admit that the Sony Ericsson Yari is just a ordinary mid range phone. However, the gesture control gaming make it really appealing. The phone is expected to be highly-desired phone by many teenagers. It said, if you can’t afford a Nintendo Will, maybe Yari can be the substitute.

Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 Review

16 October, 2009 (16:50) | Mobile Reviews | By:

Last month Samsung has launched two Omnia range’s phones, one is the Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO that we’ve already reviewed, and another one is this Samsung Omnia Lite B7300. Unlike B7610, the Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 is a mid-range smartphone that come with a affordable price tag and also a slimmer size. So let’s take a closer look…

Design

Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 is a solely touchscreen smartphone, so you won’t see much physical button on the phone and the design is has nothing much different than other typical touchscreen phone. There is a 3 inches display on the front which can supports 64k colors and has a resolution of 240×400 pixels. It is quite nice for a budget phone to have such large screen. Although it is not an AMOLED screen, but it does give you enough clarity of image and text. The overall design is a bit conservative, clearly that the design was inspired by Samsung Tocco Ultra Touch because they are look so alike. At just 13mm thick and a tiny bit over 103g, it´s also one of the most compact touchscreen smartphones on the market.

OS and User Interface

The Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 is running on Windows Mobile version 6.1, but in some places it probably ship with Windows Mobile 6.5. If you get the 6.1 one, don’t worry because it is upgradeable to WiMo 6.5. For what ever the version of WinMo is, the phone are still implementing Samsung’s TouchWiz Interface version 2.0. However, unlike in Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO, the Samsung B7300 Omnia Lite doesn’t have that cube interface so the dedicated cube button is replaced with a menu button access your personalized menu screen.

Video and Music

Although the Omnia Lite is a budget smartphone, but Samsung does included some features that will only seen on a high-end smartphone. Like this one, the direct DivX video playback, where usually will need to installed a third party application to play it for a WinMo phone. But in this phone, you can play it on the multimedia player. Apart of that it also supports XviD/MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV9 video file. Watching videos on the Omnia Lite is okay, though 3 inches display is a bit smaller. The multimedia player also support MP3/AAC/WMA files. So enjoying music playback is not a problem too. However the quality of the audio is only mid range level. But considered it is a mid-range device, it is still acceptable.

Camera

The camera is a 3.15 mega pixel camera, which operates at 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution.  It’s additional features including auto focus, Geo tagging and smile detection which helps to ensure pictures taken are of the best quality available. The camera also provide many options such as smile shot, multi-shot, Portrait, Landscape, night shot, Panorama, and sports shooting mode. The cam not in a low light environment. The camera also has the ability to capture video at 30 frames per second in VGA quality.

Other

Some other notable features including the TV-out feature allows you to enjoy the still pictures or video on television screen at larger size. For browsing website, the phone offer two options for you – The Opera browser or the new Internet Explore. However, the later one  loading pages is very slow, although it is a newer version. For fast Internet access is provided by HSDPA and Wi-Fi capabilities, but if you have these connectivities nearby, than you still can use the slower connect ivies like GPRS or EDGE.

Final Words

Being a smartphone, the Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 is not up to the standard. However, being a affordable phone, the Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 is much more than that. If you are fancy for a smartphone but don’t want to pay too much, than this phone is may be the perfect phone for you.
